Shortland Psychology

Shortland Psychology provide personalised support for adults, children and families who are impacted by trauma. Having a traumatic experience of any kind can be life changing and affects how we feel, think and behave. The effects of trauma are complex and can present as severe withdrawal, extreme anxiety, to having times of not feeling real, or any combination of these.

Although often an experience we look forward to, pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal time can be intensely frightening experiences in which loss of control can leave us feeling powerless. Various circumstances or interventions could lead to separation from your baby, fear of the loss or disability of your baby, or sadly experiencing the devastating loss of your baby. Some people may need help to overcome PTSD symptoms relating to pregnancy, childbirth, or the life changes that come following childbirth. Some parents may be struggling to bond with their baby or relate to one another as a new family, and sadly some may need bereavement support. The experience of childbirth is very individual and yet affects mothers, partners, other children, the wider family, and healthcare professionals.

At Shortland Psychology, we would explore the impact that your experiences have had on your life, make sense of why you are experiencing particular difficulties and consider the best approach for your needs to help you to move forward. We work collaboratively with you using evidence-based interventions including CBT and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). We always consider the impact of attachment and draw on a range of psychological models, depending on your needs.
