Volunteer for us
Are you a member of a racially marginalised community, and have experienced birth trauma yourself?
We’re looking for compassionate individuals who have navigated their own birth-related trauma and recovery, to join our team of volunteer peer supporters.
Why your voice is vital
Evidence shows that people from racially marginalised groups face disproportionately higher risk of trauma and poorer maternal outcomes. Black women in the UK are nearly four times more likely to die during the perinatal period than white women, and Asian and mixed‑ethnicity women face twice the risk.
Shared lived experience builds stronger empathy and trust. Peer support is proven to help recovery by offering emotional and experiential insight in ways clinical professionals cannot.
What the role involves
Listening by email or phone, sharing what helped you recover and offering hope via your journey
Providing support to parents and partners who have experienced traumatic births
Helping foster inclusivity and providing culturally competent care to people who may feel invisible in support networks
About us
The only UK charity solely dedicated to birth trauma support, founded in 2004 and now supporting both mothers and fathers with PTSD or trauma symptoms after birth
Our peer team provides support via email, phone, WhatsApp sessions, and on our private Facebook group of nearly 20,000 members
We lead awareness campaigns, including Birth Trauma Awareness Week, which this year had the theme of Inequalities in Maternity Care, and influence policy on maternity. This included being the secretariat to 2024’s parliamentary inquiry on birth trauma

“Reading the information on the BTA website was the moment everything fell into place for me about my son’s birth. I didn’t know that what I had experienced was trauma and I totally underestimated how it had affected me because nobody else had ever mentioned birth trauma to me before.”
